Medicinal Information

TetrahydrocannabinolThere are marked differences in the knowledge on the medical uses of cannabis and cannabinoids in different diseases. For nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, anorexia and cachexia in HIV/AIDS, spasticity in multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury there is strong evidence for medical benefits. For many other indications, such as epilepsy, movement disorders and depression there is much less available data.

Clinical studies with single cannabinoids or, less often with whole plant preparations (smoked marijuana, encapsulated cannabis extract) have often been inspired by positive anecdotal experiences of patients employing crude cannabis products. The anti-emetic, the appetite enhancing, relaxing effects, analgesia, and therapeutic use in Tourette's syndrome were all discovered in this manner.

Incidental observations have also revealed therapeutically useful effects in a study with patients with Alzheimer's disease wherein the primary issue was an examination of the appetite- stimulating effects of THC. Not only appetite and body weight increased, but disturbed behaviour among the patients also decreased. The discovery of decreased intraocular pressure with THC administration in the beginning of the 1970s was also serendipitous. For this reason, more surveys have been conducted in the past decade questioning individuals that use cannabis therapeutically.

In cannabis there are a lot of active substances. The exact activity of these substances is unkown. The most important substances are measured in the laboratory. The substances are dronabinol and cannabidiol. Of all the other substances a fingerprint is made to verify that all these substances are present in the cannabis in the same amount every time.

Since 2005 Bedrocan BV is the only company contracted by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport for the growth and production of medicinal Cannabis. Cannabis Flos Bedrocan®, Bedrobinol®, Bediol® and Bedica® can be prescribed by doctors for both humans and animals.

The THC-level of Bedrocan© is constant around 22 %. The CBD-level is lower as1%. This product is available as Cannabis Flos variety Bedrocan®.

All varieties are guaranteed free of pesticides and heavy metals. It is also purged of any micro organisms. Bedrocan, Bedrobinol and Bediol are supplied in packages of 5 grams only. Distributor is Fagron Pharmaceuticals in Nieuwekerk aan de IJssel. Cannabis Flos variations Bedrocan is is a medical substance registered under Dutch law.

(Dronabinol is the official name of the substance also known as THC).

Possible effectiveness:
There are a lot of diseases mentioned where cannabis could be beneficial. In many cases there is no scientifically proof of effectiveness. The Office of Medicinal Cannabis (OMC) states that at the following disorders a faire chance of effect can be expected of cannabis.

  • Spasticity with pain, for instance at
    • Multiple Sclerosis
    • Spinal cord injury
  • Nausea and vomiting by
    • Chemotherapy
    • Radiotherapy
    • Treatment with HIV-medication
  • Chronic neuralgic pain
  • Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome
  • Palliative treatment of cancer and HIV/AIDS

In most cases the evidence is limited to individual experiences. So don't put your expectations to high. A physician may prescribe cannabis for different indications than above. Read more on:

How much toxins are eliminated from marijuana smoke with a vaporizer?

(Dale Gieringer):
Medical marijuana patients may be able to protect themselves from harmful toxins in marijuana smoke by inhaling their medicine using an electric vaporizer, according to initial results of a study by California NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies).

The study showed that it is possible to vaporize medically active THC by heating marijuana to a temperature short of the point of combustion, thereby eliminating or substantially reducing harmful smoke toxins that are normally present in marijuana smoke. Vaporizers may therefore substantially reduce what is widely regarded as the leading health hazard of marijuana, namely respiratory harm due to smoking. (...)
The NORML-MAPS study tested a device called the M1 Volatizer®, an aromatherapy vaporizer developed by Alternative Delivery Systems, Inc. It consisted of an electric heating element in a chamber that radiates heat downwards over a sample of marijuana sitting in a standard pipe or "bong" bowl. Output from the vaporizer was analyzed and compared to smoke produced by combusting the sample with a flame.
The vaporizer produced THC at a temperature of 185° C. (365° F.) while completely eliminating three measured toxins - benzene, a known carcinogen, plus toluene and naphthalene. Carbon monoxide and smoke tars were both qualitatively reduced by the vaporizer, but additional testing is needed to quantify the extent of the decrease.

Although the study was not designed to detect the highly carcinogenic tars known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are thought to be a leading culprit in smoking-related cancers, there was good reason to believe that they were suppressed, since they normally form at much higher temperatures of combustion.

When vaporized, the marijuana emitted a thin gray vapor and was left with a green to greenish-brown "toasted" appearance, whereas the combusted sample produced thick smoke and turned to ash. Significant amounts of benzene began to appear at temperatures of 200° C. (392° F), while combustion occurred around 230° (446°F) or above. Traces of THC were in evidence as low as 140° C. (284° F).
